Why do cats purr?

Purrrrr ;)
Most people know/figure that when their cat is purring, it means they are content or happy. But did you ever wonder exactly why they purr?

A cat's purr is caused by their vocal chords drawing together and apart over and over again. This causes a vibration in their voice box, thus the "purr" is heard.

Reasons cats purr:

1. Communication
-Communication is the base of the answer to why cats purr. Purring is thought to be a way of communicating. Some think that when a kitten purrs, it's to reassure the mom that everything is okay.

2. To show they are relaxed
-This is one speculation because most cats purr while being petted, right? They seem very relaxed when you pet their backs.

3. To show they are injured/sick/dying
-Don't freak out and think your cat is dying every time you hear them purr, now! You'll probably be able to tell which purr is more intense than others. This kind of purr will normally be loud and obnoxious.

4. To calm themselves down
-Some people actually believe that cats purr sometimes to keep themselves relaxed under pressure. Just like all humans, felines get stressed too and it's a common belief that purring keeps cats from reaching their breaking point.

How do you get rid of fruit flies?

Everyone gets those nasty, annoying fruit flies in their home at least a few times. Do those bugs bug you as much as they bug me? I bet they do! And I know how to get rid of them in environmentally friendly way!

Here's How:

1. Remove the fruit that is attracting the fruit flies.
-This is the most obvious step, of course. But what you may not know is that those pesky little fruit flies lay tiny eggs in that fruit! Some tips also include: keeping your trash in a covered bin, keeping fruit in the refrigerator, and mopping your floors to remove any excess "spillage".

2. Wash the dishes and clean out the sink drain.
-Cleaning out the sink is just one more thing you can do to prevent the flies from sticking around. Small pieces of food sometimes get stuck in the dish drainer and even those small pieces can attract fruit flies. If you feel it's necessary, you can also use some Comet to clean the sink even more thoroughly.

3. Catch and Release them.
-To catch and release the flies, all you have to do is put a piece of rotten fruit into a big bowl/jar. Then you should put a paper cone with a small hole in the bottom in the mouth of the jar. The pointy end needs to point downward. The flies won't be able to get out this way.
4. Vacuum them up.
-Sounds kind of funny, doesn't it? But this proves pretty effective if you also do all the methods above along with it. Use the vacuum's hose to suck up the fruit flies that are all lingering in one spot.

How do I quit smoking cigarettes?

The first thing you should know about quitting smoking is that to quit you need to want to quit.

There are many different ways to quit smoking. But here are some of the ways that most people use:

1. "Cold Turkey"
Quitting cold turkey means to stop smoking suddenly and completely all at once. Most of the smoking population has attempted quitting cold turkey. Rarely, though, does it work the first time. It usually requires 2, 3, or 4 attempts before it works. Some may find this method too difficult because in a way, it leaves your body in shock. Your body will crave nicotine even more. If you don't think you have enough strength to quit cold turkey, I'd advise you to choose a different method.

2. "Hypnosis"
I know what you're thinking..."no way is this going to work; Hypnosis is only done in movies." Well, you are mistaken. You can in fact be hypnotized. Hypnosis, in short, is deep relaxation. It's a myth that they have complete control over your body. You surely are still driven by yourself, so just relax. While your body and mind are completely relaxed, you begin to be heavily influenced by the sound of a voice and particular words. Your conscious as well as subconscious parts work together to do this. Not many smokers have tried hypnosis, but the ones that it hypnosis worked for, swear by this method that it does work. I'd say give this one a go...what can it hurt?

3. Chantix
Chantix is a stop-smoking pill containing varenicline that is used to reduce the craving for nicotene. Not only does it decrease the craving itself, it also makes the taste of cigarettes significantly less desirable. This will up the chances for you to not even want a cigarette. Chantix, of course, doesn't work for everyone just like some other medications might not work for a person. Varenicline more often than not, though, makes the act of smoking almost repulsive. Most people would suggest Chantix or another stop-smoking drug to help you quit. Another one of these drugs is Zyban, which also has a good reputation for helping you through your act of quitting.

4. Cutting Down Gradually
Cutting down gradually will either work for you, or not work for you. But of all the ways to quit, I do suggest this one the most. Maybe you could try having only 5 or 6 cigarettes a day and each couple days, cut that amount down by one more. Another way is to count by the hour. Say you usually smoke two cigarettes an hour. Try to have one cigarette per two hours. You know yourself best so find an amount that will work for you so you don't break down and give up the act of quitting. Normally, people will suggest that your final quit date is no longer than two weeks after your first day of cutting down. Having and marking down a final quit date will probably help you, too. Also, don't keep as many cigarettes on you so you aren't inclined to smoke more than you intend to.
